Génesis Damián Pérez and Alan Preciado García, members of the Lifeguard rescue team from Rosarito Beach, rescued 3 tourists who were about to drown in the beach where Papas and Beer is located, on the past May 14th.
“The confidence and lack of attention to the recommendations of the lifeguards was what caused this mishap, because according to the lifeguards instructions they were supposed to stay in the low part of the shore because of the dangerous underwater courses, however they ignored this and were dragged deep offshore.” "The underwater courses depend on the tides, and they are never in the same place, this time, we recommended the swimmers to stay in the low part of the shore, but they said they were good swimmers and any way got dragged deep offshore.” They said. Once they noticed the emergency, they launched to the rescue swimming and with the water jet sky in order to help the three people who were drowning at sea, and even though things got complicated for a moment, finally they reached the shore safely, where their friends waited.
The Rosarito beaches are well known because of the underwater courses which turn it very dangerous to swim in deep waters, mostly because the swimmers get very trusty and don’t really notice when the flow drags them and makes their swim back even more difficult, the most dangerous areas known are the El Canal and La Misión.
It is very common for these situations to present themselves, especially when is a high season for visitors, there have been up to 20 rescue missions and all because of the lack of common sense and not following the lifeguard instructions even if it is for their own safety.
Part of the warning methods that the lifeguard department has is the flyer hand out and the warnings given to swimmers along with the lookout surveillance in the most visited zones.
“The first thing you need to do at the moment of a rescue is to verify there is no danger to us, then you get your floater and your fins to go get the person, secure him or her so you can take him/her to shore”. Damián Pérez said.
They stressed that in previous years when there was not enough surveillance in the area there were 12 deaths by drowning in only one year. This number has decreased gradually and this present year there have been no deaths registered because of this matter.
The Rosarito Beach Lifeguard Corps has 24 members that range in between 19 and 53 years old, who get a rigorous training to keep in good condition and shape in order to provide security for visitors of the municipality beaches.
“We have different types of training, we run 3 times a week and swim every single day since 6:30 A.M. sometimes deep into the sea and others in a swimming pool”. They mentioned. They said that on May 17 some members of the lifeguard Corp will go to San Diego, to get a training course to broaden their knowledge in this matter.
Therefore, they called on the citizens to respect the recommendations in order to keep the white balance in the beaches of the municipality.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> |
