Want to know more about Baja?
ASK KC AT THE BEACH . . . .

Dear Readers
Several of my readers have sent me some interesting quotes that I will share with you each issue. Please send me your favorites.
QUOTE OF THE WEEK: “Everything is funny as long as it’s happening to someone else.” . . .Will Rogers

Dear KC
I am a widower of 3 years and have a nice group of friends here in San Diego. However, I’m about to retire and plan to move down to Rosarito Beach on a permanent basis later this year. About a month ago I met a lovely lady who I’ll call Jessie at Rosa & Rita Karaoke Bar. I’m really new at this and don’t know quite how to proceed. I don’t feel comfortable just asking her to dinner, I don’t do small talk very well. Do you have any suggestions on how to just get to know her better but without being pushy?
In “Like” but not “Love”

Dear Like
My best suggestion is start with the phone. Find out her interests. If she lives down here, she is very likely a member of one of the many charitable organizations in Rosarito. (USBC, Flying Samaritans, Cruz Roja) Find out which one and suggest you might be interested in joining. That gives both of you an excuse to meet (at one of their meetings) and not commit to an actual “date”. You’ll both have a chance to find out if you want to pursue some kind of a relationship – maybe just friendship. You’ll also have an opportunity to do some good for the community and start creating a new circle of friends.

Dear KC

I have lived in Ensenada for the past 5 years. When I first moved down here my adult kids used to come down regularly to visit. But now, thanks to all the horrible press we are getting, they are reluctant to drive through Tijuana. Lately, they are starting to express concern for my safety and have suggested that maybe I should consider moving back to San Diego. I have a lovely home here and just love it! The people are wonderful and the cost of living is one I can afford in rather nice style. I don’t feel the least bit unsafe here in Ensenada and have no concerns when I cross the border about twice a month.
Can you think of a way I can reassure my kids that it’s safe?
Secure

Dear Secure
We here in Baja are all suffering from a little “death by media” While it is true there is an increased level of violence in Tijuana, it by no means rivals some places in the US (Washington DC and New Orleans to name just two). There have been occasional deaths of innocent by-standers, but this too happens in many American cities. The best course is to use common sense. Obviously, you don’t drive around in bad neighborhoods at 2am in a black Hummer with tinted windows!!. When crossing to border at San Ysidro heading for Ensenada, you never even go into Tijuana, you just use the border road and a few miles beyond that you’re on the toll road and in less than an hour you’re in Ensenada. On their next trip down to see you, take them out to a really great dinner (with all the money you save by living there) and remind them of how much fun it is to visit there. (Note to kids: Give your Mom a break, I’m sure she’s doing just fine and I’m certain she is perfectly safe)

Dear KC
For years I’ve heard about the Rosarito/Ensenada Bike Ride (yes, those of us who live in San Francisco do know there is a Southern California, too) I’ve always wanted to participate, but just never had the time. I finally realized the only way I was going to do it was to “TAKE” the time, so this year I decided to do it. Recently, I heard from some bike riding friends that it might not happen --- say it ain’t so!!!
I’m finally ready

Dear Ready
It’s a good thing you’re ready, because they’re ready for you and 7,500 of your nearest and dearest friends. The 30th annual Rosarito/Ensenada Bike ride is ON! It starts in Rosarito at 8am on April 18, in front of the Fiesta Hotel. The 50 mile course will take you along the Pacific Coast and inland to see some of rural Baja. Once in Ensenada you should head for the Fiesta Line Fiesta for a well deserved Margarita, some fun music and a spectacular sunset. One hopes you have some non biking friends that will meet you there and drive you back. For full information call 1-800-282-9352 or www.rosaritoensenada.com . Don’t forget some candy for the kids.

Two years ago KC left the corporate worlds of New York and Los Angeles and is now a full time resident of Rosarito Beach. This recent transitional experience gives KC a unique perspective on visiting and living in Baja
