Friends of the Library: Making a Difference in the local Community
In 2006 three friends, Roberta Gisea, Joyce Martin, and Mary Jo Cooney were inspired to find a way to help the libraries in Rosarito and the “Friends of the Library" came into being. These three friends brought together a number of concerned citizens to address these needs. Donated goods and labor and a collection led to the installation of doors and new vegetation at one of the libraries.
The libraries need bilingual volunteers who are willing to work a few hours a week assisting the library staff. Don`t worry, even if you are not bilingual you can still volunteer.
Friends of the Library hope to continue to increase the materials available to the people of the community and to provide many more books in both Spanish and English.
In addition to books, the libraries are in need of storage cabinets, light fixtures, waste baskets, book ends, stackable chairs for adults and children, tables, computers, printers, and much more.
They visit the libraries frequently to assess need for repairs or materials and are happy to report that in many cases the community is taking care of upkeep. Because their funds are limited, they need volunteers. They need simple, carpentry, painters and people who are willing to provide good old-fashioned elbow grease.
The Friends of the Library group is having a Tour of the five Rosarito libraries to highlight the progress the libraries have made and to attend the dedication of the newly built Gazebo at the Morelos Library. The Tour is scheduled for Monday, August 16, 2010 at 9:30 at CEMAC (1 Block West of Banamex). Friends of the Library (FOL) attend as guests. Non-members may participate by joining FOL. Annual membership fee is $5.00. Maps to the libraries will be available at CEMAC on the day of the event. Tour 9:30 to noon.
