Mi Granito de Arena: A Beach Program for Kids
Mayor Hugo Torres launched the program “Mi Granito de Arena” (My Pebble Sand) where local kids volunteer during summer time to keep the beach area clean. Each participant receives a badge showing that they are true “Guardians of the Beach”.
The youngsters receive a distinctive T-shirt and take surfing and swimming classes; they also walk the downtown beach during weekends giving plastic bags to tourists, while inviting them to put the trash inside many trash cans located along the beach area.
“I am grateful that these kids help us to bring a better image of our city to our visitors” Said Mayor Hugo Torres.
More than 60 kids are participating in the program from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Mi Granito de Arena concludes on August 7th, 2010 as most kids go back to school.
